Using social media for good

June 27th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I love reading blogs and learning about the myriad of cool tools, widgets and mashups that can be so useful in our personal and professional lives. My new favorite site is Wordle, which I discovered reading Leo Bottary’s CSI/Season 2 blog yesterday. It allows you to enter a bunch of words and then adjust colors, patterns and more until you have a word cloud that fits your mood or purpose. You can save your project and also view others’ saved word art. I played around on the Wordle site for a while and then realized it was perfect for creating a mindmap gift for a friend – something I read about in Jon Swanson’s Levite Chronicles blog a few weeks ago.

See what a cool social media mashup this is? First I read Jon’s great ideas about ways to inspire a friend… then I saved that on my Del.icio.us to come back to at a later date… then saw Leo’s post and it sparked the memory and resulted in this cool Wordle mindmap as a gift for my best friend Bren. She absolutely loved it, by the way. Thanks Jon, Leo and Wordle for helping to make me a better friend!

What other cool uses for Wordle can you think of? I think it’s perfect for creating visual love notes to your significant other, supportive messages for a colleague, or stylish depictions of your goals or resolutions.

What’s your new favorite social media site or mashup, and how are you using it to enhance the relationships and connections in your life?
